Welcome...

Layton Howerton...
Singer, songwriter and storyteller

Biography...
There’s a sense in which the texture of a landscape can channel and shape the people who live there. The rugged, desolate mountains of Wyoming tower like wrecked spires, dwarfing the human inhabitants, and somehow, by their mute presence, drawing attention to the vast emptiness around them.

The open spaces provide no distraction for the mind, and the immense scale of the natural world, the backdrop against which life is lived, stands as a perpetual witness that we humans are small and fragile and finite. It is a good place, Layton Howerton says, to go when you surrender. Click here to read more

"Last night I had the very great privilege of having Layton Howerton sing on "Not Alone" (one of the songs we're recording for the new project). Many of you will be familiar with Layton -- those of you who are not should hunt down his masterpiece "Boxing God" or any of his subsequent projects. (Check out The Storyteller's Journal)

Layton could sing the text on the back of a shampoo bottle and make you laugh and/or cry – he has a rough, rich voice full of larger-than-life character (much like the man himself). It’s quite wonderful.

Anyway, I wanted that rough, earthy flavor on this particular song, and Layton happened to be in town, and so I shamelessly begged and he agreed to give it a shot. He warned Roy and me that he wasn’t much of a part singer and then growled and whispered and sang magic all over the dang thing. It was pretty cool. I felt like I was doing a duet with John Prine, or Tom Waits. ‘Cept better than that. A duet with Layton Howerton."

Something to note...

Phil Joel from the Newsboys when asked "What's currently in your CD player" by CCM Magazine

"Probably the CD I play more often... is a CD-I don't know if it actually got anywhere or sold many copies-by a guy named Layton Howerton and its called Boxing God.  Its an unbelievable record.  Its one of the purest Christian records I've ever heard." ~ Phil Joel ~
